Rivals Of The Beatles
is a new book, and was brought to my attention by its author and Leo's Den customer, Martin Orkin. This was because of his passion for the Shadows, and the dedicated section to Cliff and The Shadows that he included in the book.
Rivals Of The Beatles is well-written and very entertaining. It was published in April 2021, and is available initially in a limited edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. More details are available on Martin's dedicated website rivalsofthebeatles.com
and his site is the only place from which the book is currently available from.

Martin has spent the last 4 years writing his book, and he kindly sent me a copy recently to see what I thought of it.

Martin's book is called Rivals Of The Beatles and I must say I am mightily impressed by it. This is a hardback book with an attractive glossy cover, and pages that have been sewn in, not glued. As a book it certainly oozes quality and highlights the care and attention that has been put into it by Martin. There are over  800 pages and from what I have seen and read so far, it is totally worth it and more in entertainment value. There are no images within this book but that is not a negative at all.

The book tells the individual and detailed stories of 20 groups of The Beatles' era, including The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, The Kinks; and Cliff Richard and The Shadows - of course! All the tales are interesting but what is different about this book is the way Martin shows a connection with each group to The Beatles. In some cases The Beatles helped their fellow competitors with hit songs that they didn't want or need for themselves. The sheer variety of influences that occurred is one factor in making this book so appealing. The areas Martin has touched upon and the way he has written this book makes it a thoroughly interesting read and his passion and dedication to this book comes across.
This is a beast of a book and here are the dimensions to show that...
L 24.5cm x W 18cm x D 5cm
Martin's book is nearly 2 inches thick - and weighs about 1.5kilos/3.5 lbs.
If you check out the link above you will also find some sample pages to take a look at and read in advance.
There is a 28 page chapter relating to Cliff And The Shadows. This chapter includes a detailed look at the early years of rock 'n' roll which gave rise to Cliff and his group, their subsequent massive popularity in Britain, and finally the titanic tussle between them and The Beatles in 1963 when the Liverpool band got properly going and these two great groups battled it out for chart supremacy!

Review: Monday, 7th February 2022

"I've been enjoying your book immensely.  Very interesting and very well written.  Well done.  Your knowledge is incredible - so much detail, and insight into the recording process of the different artists.  And I like the references to The Beatles and what they were doing at the same time.

You asked me to let you know what I think of the Cliff Richard and the Shadows chapter.  Well I think it's great, particularly because you describe the Pop scene as it was before the Beatles, in the very early sixties and the late fifties, with great acts like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and many more. All of these influenced Cliff Richard and then The Beatles and The Stones etc.  This is all very interesting to me and my age group who remember it well. But it's also good for younger readers, and readers in the future, to know the evolution of music and understand those early times and how different and great they were - and how they changed music forever."
