Stylus music are pleased to announce the arrival of "THE MERCURY LABEL USA/UK issues 1957-1969"(10PTING 338)
It took many years to see the value of Mercury which was formed in 1945 in Chicago. Our compilation picks up 12 years later when the label was a hot-bed of sax honkers and wailing guitarists such as Sil Austin, Red Prysock, Ralph Marterie and Boyd Bennett. J.J. Cale made his first disc at the age of 20 as Johnny Cale. Ray Ethier was the guitarist behind Ben Hewitt. As we approach the 60s there were many fine bands able to rock the joint such as the Apollos, Rockin' Aces and Mus-Twangs. The early 60s were lean years for the label however they signed The Motions in 1964 for 3 singles. B.Bumble was 6 years past having a hit but the subtle 'Flight of the Hornet', was best remembered in the UK for 'Saturday Nite at the Duckpond' by The Cougars. We find The McCoys a long way from 'Hang on Sloopy' and there are also tracks from the UK from the Imposters, Reg Guest and Ivor Raymonde.
