Stylus Music proudly presents "THE ANDREW OLDHAM ORCHESTRA 1964-66 recordings" (10PTING 342)
Rolling Stones manager, Andrew Oldham saw himself as the UK's answer to Phil Spector and recorded lots of instrumental B sides
as well as complete albums. The Orchestra were based around a selection of session musicians which included Ian Stewart on piano, John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page on guitars plus Messrs Watts and Wyman. No session details were given to keep the mystique. It is known that Steve Marriott of the Small Faces provided harmonica support and possible Jagger. 29 tracks beginning with a cover of American surf band The Astronauts, credited solely to John Paul Jones. 'Ba-Ja' featured the distinctive six-string bass of Jones. Apart from boisterous Decca B sides such as 'There are but 5 Rolling Stones' and 'Funky and Fleopatra' there are several tracks from Lionel Bart's Maggie May and The Rolling Stones Songbook. The 'East West LP' appeared only in America featuring songs by The Four Seasons and Beach Boys. Also, tracks from his Ace of Clubs '16 Hip Hits LP' and to close three tracks from a label started by Oldham known as Immediate.
Hopefully plenty here to keep you interested. Track 29 has its origins in the Yardbirds 'Steeled Blues;.
